Grant Boosts Education Research
[ October 21, 1996 ] The Donner Canadian Foundation has awarded a major grant this month to support research
on education change in western Canada. The Society for the Advancement of Excellence in
Education has been awarded $256,000 to undertake two research studies examining the
effectiveness of charter and alternative model public schools. The research will be
carried out over three years at twelve B.C. and Alberta school sites.
"The research is designed to document and assess the potential of these schools to
enhance public education," said Society President, Dr. Olav Slaymaker. "We are
particularly interested in commissioning research to explore their effect on student
performance and parental involvement, and the possibilities that school choice and
site-based management present to increase learning outcomes and cost-effectiveness. The
studies will inform future policy on alternative choice public schools in Canada."
The research will follow up on key findings of a major study released last year, Exemplary
Secondary Schools in Canada. It will be modelled after several multi-million dollar
studies being conducted by the U.S. Department of Education and the National Education
Association on public charter schools and schools of choice in the U.S. "It is
important that Canadian policy-makers also have access to Canadian research data to guide
our decisions about effective school governance and successful practice," said
Slaymaker.
