Traditional Schools Recommended as important option
[ June 8, 1998 ] A report by Dr. Peter Coleman of SFU breaks new ground on the question of Traditional
Schools.
Colemans research examines fourteen original Traditional School proposals made to
school boards across the province in recent years. The Pressure for Choice is
an in-depth analysis of what parents are seeking in Traditional Schools that they cannot
find in their neighbourhood schools.
Professor Coleman concludes that the proposals are a good match with a large body of
research about the conditions for effective schools. He suggests the
advantages of such schools include more satisfied parents, more committed students, and
hence, higher levels of achievement.
They capture much of what is being said about the differences between ordinary
schools and effective schools. There are no guarantees in education, but these schools
represent a very good opportunity. (Coleman p.49)
Richmond and Vancouver School Districts are presently considering Traditional School
proposals.
The research was commissioned in October '97 by the Society for the Advancement of
Excellence in Education. 'The Pressure for Choice' (55.pp) may be obtained from the
Society.
