New Report Profiles Outstanding Principals
[ November 24, 2001, Kelowna, BC ] Nominees for the
2001 Garfield Weston Foundation Outstanding Principals Awards share their secrets for
producing academic gains in their schools in a new study released today. Principal
Portraits profiles principals from 10 public secondary schools in Alberta and British
Columbia where academic achievement has significantly improved or students performed above
expectations based on the income and education of their parents.
Research suggest there is a powerful connection between the actions of principals and
school results, regardless of student backgrounds, said Helen Raham of the
Society for the Advancement of Excellence in Education (SAEE) who commissioned the study. We
hope that sharing these real-life stories will inspire others and make a contribution to
best leadership practices in an age of increasing school accountability for student
success.
Education researcher, Nancy Love, interviewed the principals in August, prepared the
case studies and analyzed common traits of these successful administrators. Love, a former
secondary principal now completing doctoral work in educational administration at the
University of Calgary, conducted the study as an SAEE research intern. Funding for the
research was provided by Max Bell Foundation.
All 10 administrators studied made extensive use of performance data to drive decisions
at their schools, adjust instructional strategies, and set higher targets. Other common
characteristics included high expectations for staff and students, attention to teacher
hiring and professional development, and high levels of passion and commitment to student
success in the broadest sense, not only academics.
These profiles give us a glimpse into the work of school leaders under todays
policies of accountability for student learning, said Love. These insights may
assist others in the field and those who are preparing to accept this awesome
responsibility in the future.
This years Garfield Weston Foundation Outstanding Principals Awards will be
presented in Calgary on December 4th and in Vancouver on December 6th.
