New Roles Possible for Teacher Unions?
[ February 8, 2002 ] Vancouver - Teachers unions must be agents of reform if they do not
want to be victims of reform, says Adam Urbanski, the leader of a New York teachers
union. As keynote speaker at a conference in Vancouver on February 11, Urbanski
will discuss the modernization of Americas teacher unions and its relevance for
British Columbia.
The Society for the Advancement of Excellence in Education, the sponsor of
the conference, believes the time is right for a more collaborative relationship among
teachers unions, school boards and governments.
Across Canada, teachers and governments are in conflict, and the public is
becoming intolerant of schoolyards as battlegrounds. The current climate must change or
students will continue to pay a price, say conference organizers.
They are bringing together B.C. education organizations to examine
new teacher unionism, a way of cooperating with administration in joint
responsibility for improving the quality of schools.
"Just like todays schools, unions are more like yesterday than
theyve ever been before," says Urbanski in remarks to be delivered to the
conference. "But change is inevitable, and the unions we built should now deliver a
genuine profession for teachers and more effective schools for all students."
In the luncheon address, Roslyn Kunin, of the Laurier Institution, will
look ahead to 2020 and make predictions for Canadian teachers as knowledge workers and the
changes this will mean for the profession.
