SAEE Names New Executive Director

[April 25, 2005] Nancy Wells, an experienced and highly respected educator from the province of British Columbia, has been appointed executive director of the Society for the Advancement of Excellence in Education (SAEE) effective Sept. 15th, 2005. She succeeds founding Executive Director, Helen Raham.

Widely acknowledged as an innovative and courageous educator who thrives on matching leading edge practices with organizational challenges, Ms. Wells' leadership as Superintendent is credited with transforming three BC school districts into vibrant, accountable communities of learning.

"SAEE's Board conducted a national search for a new executive director," said Katherine Wagner, Chair. "We were pleased to attract very high calibre candidates. In making our selection we were impressed with Nancy's experience and comprehensive understanding of public education and education research, along with her passion and commitment to school success."

Speaking about her appointment, Ms. Wells said, "SAEE is an organization with a reputation for linking research, public policy and school practices. I believe learners in all public schools deserve to be served by highly effective educational practices that are informed by broad, credible research. An opportunity to realize this belief through contributing to the outstanding work of the society is very exciting."

Founding Executive Director Helen Raham has provided exceptional guidance to SAEE since 1996 in developing a substantive body of research, including recent studies on improving schools in challenging circumstances and aboriginal education. Raham gave notice to the Board last year of her intention to step down from her position. She will continue to be involved with SAEE in research and development on a part-time basis.

The Society for the Advancement of Excellence in Education (SAEE) provides non-partisan education research and information to policy-makers, education partners and the public.
