Successful Aboriginal Schools Showcased
[April 23, 2007 - Toronto] Promising approaches for improving outcomes for Aboriginal students will be showcased Thursday April 25th at the Ramada Plaza Hotel.
Educators, researchers, government officials, and First Nations representatives will hear inspiring stories from three Ontario schools featured in a recent national study of ten successful aboriginal schools. Leaders from Mount Carmel Elementary (Kenora), Akwesasne Mohawk School (Cornwall) and N'Swakamok Native Friendship Centre Alternative School (Sudbury) will have the opportunity to meet for the first time as they present their schools' strategies for increasing student achievement.
Their case studies were recently published in a 350-page report on aboriginal education by University of Winnipeg Professor, George Fulford and a team of four regional researchers. Dr. Fulford and Queens University Professor, Jacquie Moore Daigle will discuss effective and innovative practices in the ten schools at Thursday's event.
The program is sponsored by the Society for the Advancement of Excellence in Education (SAEE) which commissioned the research.
