Achievement in Alberta's Charter Schools: A Longitudinal Study

This Alberta study compared student achievement in ten public charter schools with the local district and the province. Provincial assessment results for Grades 3, 6 and 9 from 1997 to 2001 were used as the basis for this longitudinal look at achievement in Alberta's charter schools. By performing value-added analysis of the relative progress of student cohorts, the researchers were able to examine charter school effects over time. The research also documents how these schools measured and reported other forms of student achievement relative to the specific goals of their charter. A profile of each charter school provides the reader with a sense of their operational characteristics.
The authors conclude that charter schools have been successful as centres of innovation and discuss the implications of their findings for Canadian educational policy, practice and further study.
The study was conducted by Dr. Frank Peters and Dr. Joe Da Costa, Department of Educational Policy Studies, University of Alberta. Statistical assistance was provided by Dr. Claudio Violato, Department of Educational Psychology, University of Calgary. The research was commissioned by SAEE with assistance from the Max Bell Foundation.
