School Improvement in Action: Case Studies from British Columbia

This report presents five case studies from schools involved in the 2002-2004 pilot program, School Improvement in Action, developed and managed by the Society for the Advancement of Excellence in Education (SAEE).
The program provides $25,000 in planning and implementation grants to each participating school to support efforts to raise literacy and math skills in public schools serving lower-income neighborhoods.
The report, chronicling each schools strategies and the results and lessons learned, is authored by University of Victoria researchers, Drs. Thomas Fleming and Helen Raptis. Fleming and Raptis provide a broad context for these studies through insightful commentary on the methods of school improvement and a comprehensive literature review, linking their research to the literature. The report concludes with eight practical recommendations to schools and districts embarking on school improvement initiatives.
The success of this pilot project has prompted SAEE to continue the program with twelve new schools receiving grants in Cycles 2 (2003-05) and cycle 3 (2005-07). The School Improvement Grants program is funded through the generous support of the Donner Canadian Foundation, the Hecht Memorial Foundation, the Canadian Language and Literacy Research Network (CLLRNet) the Royal Bank Foundation, and others.
