Meaningful Applied Phonics: A Longitudinal Early Literacy Study
Linda M. Phillips, Stephen Norris & Dorothy J. Steffler
This title reports the findings of three-year longitudinal study comparing two approaches to primary reading instruction in the Edmonton Public Schools District (EPSB).
The researchers examined the effects of the Meaningful Applied Phonics Program on children from seven schools using this program of instruction. These students were followed from Grade 1 to 3, being tested in the fall and spring of each year from 2001-2004. At the end of Grade 3, the results for this cohort on a common set of literacy measures were compared with those of a matched control group selected by the school district who were exposed to a more balanced reading program.
Principal investigator was Dr. Linda Phillips, Director of the Canadian Centre for Research on Literacy at the University of Alberta. Beginning with an overview of the research literature, followed by a description of the program under study, Phillips crisply analyzes all facets of the study in accord with the data collected for the treatment group, the data provided by EPSB for the treatment and control comparisons, and the EPSB-provided data on the fidelity of program implementation. The report concludes with a set of recommendations based on the evidence.
The research was commissioned by SAEE with financial support from the Royal Bank Foundation, Donner Canadian Foundation, Edmonton Public Schools, HSBC, Teck-Cominco, Coca Cola Canada, Investors Group and an anonymous donor.
An article by Helen Raham, based on the report, has been published in ABC Canada's Literacy at Work Newsletter Download the PDF file here.
