School Improvement Grants Project
The School Improvement Grants Program (SIGP) is an action research project in British Columbia to support efforts to raise literacy and math skills in public schools serving lower-income neighbourhoods.
Developed and managed by the Society for the Advancement of Excellence in Education (SAEE), the program provides $25,000 in planning and implementation grants for each participating school. Seven elementary schools have completed their two year project. Another six schools, five elementary and one secondary, have been awarded grants for Cycle 2 of the program. A third set of schools will begin their literacy interventions in September 2005.
The goals of the SIGP program are to:
♦ raise low literacy and numeracy skills of children from less advantaged neighbourhoods
♦ provide grants to schools to support innovations in teaching to improve outcomes
♦ document these innovations to share with other schools facing similar challenges.
The program is funded through the generous assistance of the Donner Canadian Foundation, the Hecht Memorial Foundation, the Canadian Language and Literacy Research Network (CLLRNet), the Royal Bank Foundation, and others.
A composite report containing case studies of the Cycle 1 schools and cross-case analysis was published by SAEE in January 2005 to expand the benefits of lessons learned to other sites. The Cycle 2 studies will be published in December 2006.
