Phonemic Awareness Instruction in Kindergarten Classrooms

A comparative study conducted in 2001-03 as part of the early intervention program in BC's Maple Ridge school district. Eight Kindergarten classes were involved in the study in which 4 kindergarten teachers employed a different approach to literacy in their morning and afternoon classes. One method included explicit instruction in phonemic awareness.

Literacy outcomes for students in each group are measured at the end of Kindergarten and Grade 1, with particular attention paid to effects on children at-risk of reading failure.

The principal investigator is Sheridan Angerilli. She has over 20 years of teaching experience, mainly in special education. She holds an MA in Psychology of Education/Learning disabilities and has taught courses at two local universities.

A report analyzing the findings will be jointly published by the Maple Ridge School District and SAEE in February 2004. SAEE has also donated $25,000 to support the study.
