An Evaluation of the ArtsSmarts Program in Caslan School
Does integrating the arts into classroom learning make a difference in student success? This three-year case study will document the effects of the ArtsSmart Program in a K-9 school located in a Metis community several hours north of Edmonton, Alberta.
Struggling with low student achievement, low literacy rates, poor attendance, behaviour concerns, and lack of parental involvement, Caslan School is attempting to increase learning success and engagement through the infusion of traditional arts and culture into the curriculum. The research, conducted by co-investigators Terry Fortin and Yvette Stack, is both qualitative and quantitative in nature. It seeks to identify longitudinal changes in student achievement and school practice resulting from the programs and to produce a set of policy recommendations based on the findings.
The resulting report will be disseminated to Canadian policy makers, practitioners, and arts education organizations in October 2006. Funding for this SAEE study was provided through the Canadian Conference of the Arts.
