Evaluating Digital Learning Objects

As the use of digital resources becomes increasingly common in the K-12 learning environment, it is important for educators and developers of these resources to be able to determine if they meet recognized quality standards.

A preliminary study was designed to produce a synthesis of known indicators of quality and an assessment guide for use in evaluating learning objects. This research was commissioned by Learn Alberta.ca and conducted by Dr. Kathryn Barker (FuturEd) and Dr. Susan Phillips under contract to SAEE, and completed in May 2006. This work resulted in a literature review, entitled Learning Objects: Quality and Assurance Approach and a draft evaluation tool, The Learning Object Quality Assessment Guide.

Further phases of this inquiry will involve field-testing the learning objects assessment tool on a wide range of digital resources and examining the impact of learning objects on teaching and learning.
